Steels travel to Basford - Preview

By Paul Webster

Stocksbridge Park Steels appear to have put their poor start firmly behind them as the Bracken Moor club travel to Basford United having taken up seven points from the last nine.

Steels lost their opening three league and cup matches a run that had manager Chris Hilton scratching his head. But their fortunes changed when they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Bedworth United which was followed by wins against Sheffield FC then 3-1 at Newcastle Town last weekend.

“We needed to make a few changes here and there as things weren’t happening for us,” said Hilton. “It’s paid off, were looking much better as a unit. We look a threat again going forward and we’ve tightened up at the back and look much more solid.

“The two lads we’ve got in on loan from Rotherham, Tom Rose and Kuda Muskwe have done very well, while Joe (Lumsden) (pictured) has three goals in five games and is looking a real handful once more.” Hilton was delighted with the win against a Newcastle side that had won both their previous two home games. “We knew they would come at us in the first 15 minutes. Dave’s (Reay) has made two good saves but we’ve hit the crossbar.

Once we got our noses in front I thought there was only going to be one winner. It was really pleasing because they’re a good side, and not many teams will go to Newcastle and win.”

The Steels boss says he and his players are looking forward to the trip to Basford who picked up just three-points from five games and have not won at home in three outings.

“We’ve won two and drawn one so its a confident and happy camp,” said Hilton..

“They look to be struggling a little bit on the 3G pitch this season but that doesn’t mean it will be any easier, they’ll certainly be no complacency from us, we’ve still got to go their and put on a performance.” Midfielder Ashley Burbeary is unavailable.

Meanwhile Hilton revealed that defender Matt Reay has turned down a move to remain at Bracken Moor after a seven day notice of approach. Full-back Richard Tootle has signed for Handsworth Parramore on a duel registration.
