Basford United 3 Stocksbridge PS 2
by David Bradley
In a game in which steels should have won. Instead Chris Hilton was left scratching his head wondering how they didn't come back from Basford with all 3pts. The game started of slowly as both teams couldn't seem to get to grips with the Surface.
Until Kuda Muskwe went running down the right wing and played in a low ball in the penalty area. Only for the defender to divert the ball back into his own net. Harrison Biggins then hit a freekick from around 25 yds over the bar. Steels had loads of possession but were caught when they failed to clear their lines and Hutchinson got in and scored the equaliser. After that Steels missed an hatfull of chances. Paling twice put it over the bar. Muskwe back flick was easily saved.
Then Lumsden knew it wasn't his day when an attempted clearance fell kindly and he somehow failed to connect with the ball and the keeper saved. Biggins put a through ball to Lumsden and again he missed the target. Lumsden then had another 1/2 chance but failed to hit the back of the net.
The 2nd half carried on the same way as the 1st with Steels missing chance after chance. This time it was Poulton who smashed a sit straight at the keeper. Then finally Muskwe got in behind the Basford defence and finished Cooly into left hand corner.
Lumsden then should have wrapped it up when he dispossessed the defender one on one with the keeper and he shot straight at him. Steels were in control and looked comfortable until Basford got 1 back from a dubious free kick. It went from 3pts to 0pts within a minute. When Basford got a second with 5 minutes left to play.
Basford had the tails up and never looked backed after. Leaving Steels ruing the missed chances.
