AFC Penistone Church 0 Stocksbridge PS 1
Wednesday night saw our reserve side play their second game of the new season, once again it was a local derby this time against local rivals AFC Penistone Church. It was good to see both sides include several youngsters in their squads.
The first half was a very tight affair with perhaps Stocksbridge just edging it with the Penistone keeper pulling out a good save to deny captain Andy Dawson with a fine twenty five yard effort just before half time.
Young forward Lewis Whitham did well up front for Stocksbridge carrying on his impressive performances off the bench for the first team,Adam Shepherd was also pushing them on from midfield.
Penistone came out strong in the second half and the Stocksbridge defence had to be strong to repel the attacks ,however it was 65 minutes before Penistone gained their first corner. Steels started to get back in the game and once again the Penistone keeper had to be alert to deny Lewis Whitham with two good saves.
When the breakthrough came it took a "worldy" goal from Adam Shepherd to settle it, a corner from the left was helped on by Whitham to the edge of the box and Shepherd volleyed into the top corner.
Steels finished the game with seven teenagers on the pitch and they battled well to see out the game and earn their second win in two games and also keep their second clean sheet.
The reserves are next in action at Bracken Moor on Saturday v Frecheville FC 3pm kick off.
