Stocksbridge PS Res 4 Grimethorpe Sports 1

In their last game of 2018 the reserve side had to field a much changed side due to suspensions and unavailability, this meant only two of the players were over twenty years of age with most of the team under twenty.

Grimethorpe were a typical County Senior side strong, experienced, and physical but this didn't faze the lads and we started the game well creating several chances with Joe Hawksworth in the middle of the park making his presence felt aided by Rodney Bruce who scored a good goal from the edge of the box to give us the lead.

The second goal came when Joe had a good run into the box but his misplaced shot fell nicely for Luke Townsend to slot home.

Grimethorpe were always a threat from set pieces due to their height and strength and they pulled a goal back from a corner.

Grimethorpe came out strong in the second half and our young back four had to be at their best to protect teenager Joe Mellor in goal they did this very well and restricted the opposition to long range efforts our fitness started to tell as the game went on and a surging run into the box from Townsend resulted in him being brought down and he converted the penalty himself to restore a two goal cushion.

He then went on to complete his hat trick by dribbling through the entire back four before placing his shot beyond the keeper to seal the points.

This was a good experience for our young squad and they stood up to the test well, the win puts us back into the top four three points behind the leaders.
