With four senior key players missing the Steels crashed out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle.
Its clear that we have some good young players coming through who will play an important part in our squad this year, sadly today we had to put square pegs into round holes, and the opposition who had come and watched our game on Tuesday must have thought it was a different side.
The first half started at a pace and after only five minutes Declan Slater sent a shot over the visitors goal, from the resulting goal kick our defensive frailties were exposed, a simple long ball, flat footed defence, and Jordan Southworth ran through the gap and fires home, 0 - 1.
Five minutes a repeat of the first with McFadyen caught on his heels and Southworth scoring his second, 0 - 2.
Half time couldn't come quick enough.
Half time 0 - 2
The second half started with a new shape and with changes making a difference, Lewis Whitham gave the crowd something to cheer when he cut in from the left to drive home from 25 yards.
As the game progressed it was the Steels who looked more impressive, and when young starlet Brandon Whitfield coolly slotted home our second, it was the home sides game to win.
Sadly a minute later another defensive error handed Irlam the win lesson to be learnt from this, you cannot afford to have so many key players missing for crucial games.
